As a fish ecology student in Michigan, there are not many marine opportunities available at home, so I decided to be brave and travel 4,000 miles to Imperia in order to fill this gap. I have not regretted this decision once.

My first two weeks have been full of incredible novel experiences, including watching the sun rise over the beautiful Mediterranean as we headed out for a survey, seeing juvenile bottlenose dolphins play around the boat, and observing many new species of seabirds! It is amazing to see these animals so closely and to watch their behavior.

I have expanded my knowledge of cetaceans greatly, even in such a short time. I find photo identification and the coordinators’ presentations to be so fascinating.

The area itself is lovely as well. I’ve filled my free time by exploring Imperia by foot, drinking cappuccinos, reading by the sea, and going out and dancing with my fellow interns. I’ve even made some local friends! Everyone I’ve met here have been genuinely lovely people.

Each day has brought new experiences, and I am so grateful to be a part of this experience with Delfini del Ponente!
